We're All Mad Here

This year’s Love

We’re lying on a sofa bed at four in the morning with one tiny grey blanket between us.

He tucks the edges around me to make sure I’m warm and keeps a little bit of the corner for himself. Our friend has passed out on his bed and it’s just the two of us left awake.

It’s been a fun night and we’ve both had more than enough to drink. The world is spinning. Our worlds are spinning. But we’re just friends right? Well that’s what we keep telling ourselves anyway.

There’s a huge silver stereo in the corner and it’s playing David Gray’s album, White Ladder, on repeat. Green lights zap across the screen with every beat and flicker around the dark room.

We’re hiding our whispered out giggles underneath the blanket and staring forward at the bookshelf in front of us.

I can’t look at him for fear my heart might actually explode – it’s already beating against the walls of my chest like a caged gorilla. I hope he can’t hear it.

The whispering stops and we fall silent for a moment.

I wonder what hes thinking?

His hand slowly reaches out to hold mine and every inch of my body starts to tingle. I turn towards him and peer through the moonlight to see his face.

I’ve never seen anything quite so perfect in all my life.

The edges of his chiselled cheekbones are being lit up by the starry skies and his frosty blue eyes are staring into mine saying the words that won’t yet leave his lips.

This Year’s Love ~ David Gray

This year’s love had better last
Heaven knows it’s high time
I’ve been waiting on my own too long

And when ya hold me like you do
It feels so right oh now
I start to forget how my heart gets torn
When that hurt gets thrown
Feeling like you can’t go on

Turning circles and time again
Cut like a knife oh now
If ya love me got to know for sure
‘Cause it takes something more this time
Than sweet, sweet lies oh now

Before I open up my arms and fall
Losing all control
Every dream inside my soul
When ya kiss me on that midnight street
Sweep me off my feet
Singing, “ain’t this life so sweet?”

This year’s love had better last

This year’s love had better last

‘Cause who’s to worry if our hearts get torn
When that hurt gets thrown
Don’t ya know this life goes on?
Won’t ya kiss me on that midnight street?
Sweep me off my feet
Singing, “ain’t this life so sweet?”

This year’s love had better last
This year’s love had better last
This year’s love had better last
This year’s love had better last
This year’s love had better last

Woah woah woah I yeah
This year’s love had better last
